On Sunday I put out the call—some might say with tongue-in-cheek—to join me on Saturday, November 2 to read through our constitution and suggest changes to it. Of course I know that reviewing a constitution is not everyone’s particular cup of tea. But all kidding aside, I really would love a few to join me for that, and I hope I don’t have to do it alone! It is an important document, as it shapes much of our ministry practice. I hope some take strong interest in it. My plan, starting at about 11am that day, is to simply read through the constitution (and bylaws), and review where we might make adjustments. We won’t make any changes that day, but will simply make note of and discuss where we might want to make changes, and put forward initial suggestions for revision. We did a major update of our constitution about five years ago. This review will not be nearly as dramatic. Still, there are opportunities for tweaks, refinements, and improvements. For example, here are a few thoughts for consideration: Should we shorten elder and deacon terms? Should we include statements about baptism and communion? Should we include other statements and/or teaching positions (such as a statements on relationship to the state, social justice, soteriology, theology of the Holy Spirit, etc.)? Should we review necessary voting percentages for things like the installation of officers or approval of the budget? Do we need to update our membership covenant? If you’re interested at all in these things, bring a lunch and join me on Saturday, November 2 at 11am!
