I'm getting back into the office this week after a Christmas break, and I have been quickly confronted with a multitude of unfinished projects and tasks. The long "to-do" list is a blessing in it represents the many opportunities to serve and do worthwhile things. A true gift of God. But as we all know, the to-do list never really ends, and that can bring a sense of burden. It can be discouraging. What should we do when we are overwhelmed by the work that remains undone? I don't have a comprehensive answer, but I can point out two things that helped me today. First, I stopped and prayed. I'll confess this isn't always my first response - but it should be. Pausing to remind myself of what I preached on Sunday—that God is big and in control—centered me and planted my mind in comfort of God's goodness and sovereignty. I may have moments of feeling overwhelmed, but He never tires and is never flummoxed. There is peace in the truth and care of God. Second, I took a moment to reflect on something encouraging and thank God for His faithfulness. Particularly, I was encouraged today by the fact that we have about 10 young people (at least) who are currently engaged in formal discipling relationships. That means that we have 10 adults who are actively doing the work of making disciples of our young people - and even more who are ready and willing. I was thankful today for those who have engaged in our "baptism mentor" training and are working to help kids think through baptism and following Jesus. This is something to celebrate, and an answer to specific prayers! As a bonus, it was a welcome encouragement. What helps you when you are overwhelmed?
