I hope you'll consider joining us for the "Praying the Bible" workshop with Donald Whitney (Sunday, August 17 at 6:30pm). Glen Averill initiated this and got us in contact with Dr. Whitney, and I'm thankful for it. Whitney has written and taught extensively on the spiritual life of the Christian and the church, and we will be blessed and benefited to have his expertise and experience at our disposal. I've read his books in seminary and used his writing in my own training and mentoring of others, and I've benefited personally from his ministry. So, I have a great deal of trust in the soundness of the material he will present. In the evangelical world, much of what is published regarding the Christian spiritual life falls into a focus on ecstatic experience that's not grounded in normal, everyday, biblical communion with God. In other words, we generally like to read about and pursue the "highs" of Christian life, while neglecting the "ordinary" means God uses to keep us close to Him. Whitney has done great work in explaining and emphasizing the value of the normal rhythms of Scripture reading and meditation and prayer. I'm not sure I've ever met a Christian who didn't feel like they could grow in their devotion to prayer and God's Word. So, I'd have to think that every one of us would benefit from taking a Sunday evening to focus on these things. Feel free to come and invite others, and pray the evening will be beneficial for our souls.
