If you're like me, there are certain passages and verses in Scripture that have always jumped off the page and stuck with you. One of those for me is Colossians 1:28; "Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ." According to Colossians 1:28, how does Paul present everyone mature in Christ? By proclaiming Him (which includes both warning and teaching). Discipleship is done by teaching Jesus. It reinforces Paul's methodology displayed in Romans 1:8-15. That is, his method of encouraging, strengthening, discipling, and maturing Christians is the preaching and teaching of the gospel. I like the way Tom Schreiner puts it as he comments on Romans 1; “preaching the gospel” and “gospel” in Paul cannot be confined to the initial proclamation of the message. The gospel includes every aspect of Christian existence…  Paul’s intention in Rome was not merely to win converts but to strengthen and edify those who were already believers in Rome.” Paul sought to accomplish both goals of evangelism and discipleship by centering on the person of Christ, because the gospel is central to bringing new life to nonbelievers, the gospel is central to the maturing and strengthening of believers, and the gospel is central to finishing life well as a believer.
