Elder Update from October
The elder retreat was held last Saturday. Mission Southside graciously allowed us to use their facilities for our all-day retreat (as they have in recent years). We appreciate their generosity.
Sunday begins a new round of adult Sunday School classes, and I think we'll be ending the season on a high note! (We'll take a break from Sunday School in the summer.) Here are the three classes we're offering:
Keep ReadingThe elders met last Thursday for our regular monthly meeting. A couple of things that we would share with you:
Keep ReadingSometimes short Bible verses are the best Bible verses. This is true with the two simple commands of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17; "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing..." That is also our goal and my request of you next week as we lead up to Resurrection Sunday. Many of us lead full and busy lives. My request is that we all intentionally make next week full of prayer and praise. Here's how we will do that together!
Keep ReadingAll of a sudden, we are squarely into the Easter season (as marked by my annual tradition of enjoying Cadbury Creme Eggs). Each year we have our own calendar of events, intended to lead us into worship of God and appreciating the significance of the cross/death and resurrection of Christ.
Keep ReadingThis Sunday we will touch on one of my favorite verses in Romans 8:1; "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Another of those verses that I consistently go back to is Hebrews 10:24-25; "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
Keep ReadingEarlier this week Karla sent out a substantive email with information on three important pieces - a Personal Ministry Survey, a draft for a revised CBC Constitution and Bylaws, and a prototype/draft of our new CBC Discipleship Pathway. We'll be talking more about each of those over the next weeks and months. For now, I just wanted to touch on the Personal Ministry Survey.

I mentioned on Sunday that sin in our hearts and minds inevitably affects us physically, and what we do physically affects us spiritually. We could probably find many examples of this. Simply consider how prone you are to sin when you haven't gotten sufficient rest and sleep.

At the board meetings for Multiply, we were able to spend a few hours talking about the state of missions and the work of Multiply within the United States Mennonite Brethren. A portion of this discussion was led by Aaron Box, who has been the USMB National Director for a little over a year. During this time, Aaron spoke about the goals for our denomination over the next few years, as determined by national leaders. I thought these goals were fascinating and helpful, and wanted to pass them along to you, with a few of my own thoughts.

We have supported our missionaries well, and have been privileged to send out some of our own on the mission field. But we need more CBCers to go set foot on foreign soil and see the work of missions up close. Something different happens when you see for yourself where the gospel needs to break through.
