It was a joy to see most of you at SoupFest last Sunday. And thanks to all of you who served so well to make it happen. That was a group effort! Our speaker said many interesting things on Sunday. One that stuck out to me was the story of the Sudanese people who had been experiencing what might be called the birth of the church in north Sudan – as very few Christians existed there previously. This Spiritual birth/revival has occurred in the midst of incredible conflict and bloodshed.

This Sunday at 5pm is our annual November SoupFest! Each year, around Thanksgiving-time, we gather together for this soup potluck on a Sunday evening, while hearing from someone involved in missions. Since this may be the first SoupFest for a few of you, I wanted to list out some thoughts and hints for a good SoupFest experience!

When our children are scared of bugs and spiders in their rooms, we might find ourselves saying, “They’re more scared of you than you are of them.” I honestly have no idea if that’s true. At least one of my kids is pretty freaked out by spiders at the moment. But I was reminded of this idea – they’re more scared of you than you are of them – when someone pointed out something in Joshua that I had never noticed. In Joshua 2, Rahab tells the Israeli spies several times that the people of Jericho were terrified of the Israelites.

I am intentionally writing this note on Tuesday afternoon, before we know who will be elected president. For many there is a certain amount of fear surrounding elections and politics. We worry that if we don’t elect the right leader, our nation will be doomed. Truthfully speaking there are consequences. Nations do rise and fall with their leaders. But even more true, and more comforting, is the reality that no leader is elected, appointed, or installed outside of God’s sovereign control (which implies that even if a nation falls, then that is God’s will).
