Sometimes when studying theology you get to learn new fancy words. One of those fancy words is “theodicy.” Theodicy means “the vindication of God.” In practice, it is the defense of God’s goodness and omnipotence in view of the existence of evil. Theodicy answers the question of how God could be good and omnipotent when evil exists. How could a good and powerful God allow evil? A “theodicy” will answer that question. Last night was our first ever Wednesday evening prayer service. Here are some thoughts and reflections, in no particular order. 1) It was a joy to come to church as a family on Wednesday night, for all of us to be engaged in ministering or receiving ministry. Someone asked me a very helpful and thoughtful question after Sunday’s sermon. We pondered together why, how, and if God’s call to bring in the tithe was not a “quid pro quo” kind of request. I was talking to Josh Lewis on Sunday and he helped me make a connection that I maybe should/could have made in my sermon on Sunday. He connected our partnership with Advice and Aid to the call for justice that is found in Malachi 3. Malachi promises justice through the Messiah. For the sake of time and attention spans, on Sunday morning I skipped over something in the text that isn’t crucial to the overall point of the passage, but that I do find interesting.
